During a natural cycle, many follicles (each containing one egg) are recruited into a growing pool of follicles. However, by the 4th and 5th day of the cycle, one follicle becomes the dominant follicle and causes the other follicles to stop growing and degenerate, a process called follicular atresia. At mid-cycle, the dominant follicle ruptures and releases the egg (ovulation). The egg is picked up and transported into the Fallopian tube where fertilization occurs.
In controlled ovarian hyperstimulation, the follicles that would ordinarily stop growing early in the cycle are rescued by taking additional hormone injections (MENOPUR®, BRAVELLE®, Gonal-F®, Follistim®, etc.) so that many more eggs will be ovulated (controlled ovarian hyperstimulation).
All of the eggs are then picked up and transported in the Fallopian tubes and are available for fertilization. This approach is used to maximize the possibility of conception during artificial insemination cycles and in vitro fertilization cycles.
