Uterine Fibroids Q & A

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in three possible locations: The muscular layer of your uterus, inside the uterine cavity, and outside the uterus but connected to it by a stalk of blood vessels. You can have fibroids in multiple locations at the same time.

Fibroids may be so small they’re not detected during your routine gynecological exam, and they can also become quite large. Some fibroids grow quickly, while others take years to enlarge, and you may have several fibroids that each grow at a different pace.

What symptoms develop due to fibroids?

If your fibroids are small, chances are you won’t have symptoms. As they grow larger, you’ll experience:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Long menstrual periods
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Anemia due to excessive bleeding
  • Frequent urination
  • Lower back pain
  • Painful intercourse

Uterine fibroids can also cause miscarriage and infertility.

How are uterine fibroids treated to preserve fertility?

If you become pregnant despite having uterine fibroids, their presence increases your risk of miscarriage. Fibroids can also inhibit fetal growth and cause preterm labor and postpartum hemorrhage.

Dr. Miller determines whether your fibroids should be removed based on their size and location.

Fibroids in the uterine cavity

Fibroids in the uterine cavity may cause excessive or abnormal bleeding, prevent pregnancy, or cause a miscarriage. Dr. Miller removes these fibroids using a hysteroscope, which is a narrow instrument containing a camera and lighting. The scope is inserted through your cervix and into the uterine cavity, where a surgical tool attached to the hysteroscope shaves away the fibroids.

Fibroids in the uterine muscle and outside the uterine cavity

These fibroids may or may not need to be removed, depending on their location, size, and the severity of your symptoms. Dr. Miller, who is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, talks with you about the pros and cons of removing them.

Fibroids in the uterine muscle and pushing in toward the uterine cavity

A fibroid that distorts the uterine cavity may prevent pregnancy or cause a miscarriage because they tend to grow larger when you’re pregnant, competing for space with the growing fetus. Dr. Miller recommends treatment options based on whether you want to become pregnant in the future.
