When might I consider gender selection?

At North Hudson IVF, gender selection is primarily considered as a way to balance your family. If you have two or three children who are all the same gender and you’d like your next baby to be the other gender, Dr. Miller can perform gender selection.

Gender selection may also be an option when the parents carry a genetic condition that only affects one gender. Under these circumstances, parents can choose the gender to ensure their baby is healthy and doesn’t inherit the problem.

Two examples of medical conditions are muscular dystrophy and hemophilia. Although these conditions can affect females, they primarily occur in males.  

How is gender determined?

The gender of your baby is determined by the chromosomes carried by the sperm. Each sperm may carry an X chromosome or a Y chromosome, while a woman’s egg only carries an X chromosome. When a sperm carrying a Y chromosome fertilizes the egg, you have a boy. Two X chromosomes produce a girl.

How does preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) select gender?

PGD is only possible when you undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) because testing is performed after fertilizing the egg with sperm in the lab.

During IVF, you take hormonal medications to increase the number of eggs that mature in your ovaries. Dr. Miller then removes the mature eggs and takes them to the on-site IVF lab to fertilize them with the sperm of your partner.

After the embryo develops for five days, several cells are withdrawn and sent for sex chromosome analysis. The embryos are safely frozen so they can be transferred into your uterus when the results are available.

The test results identify which embryo carries chromosomes for a girl versus those that will produce a boy. Dr. Miller then places the embryo with your preferred gender into your uterus.

How is gender selection performed using MicroSort®?

MicroSort for gender sperm sortion has been discontinued by the FDA.
